You take a photo on your phone and send it to someone. What arrives on the other end looks slightly softer, slightly blurrier, and noticeably worse than what you saw on your screen. This is not a bug — it is the default behaviour of almost every messaging app, and it happens because the app re-compresses your image before sending it.
If you have ever sent a screenshot of a document, a photo of a whiteboard, or a picture you wanted to print later and wondered why it looks degraded, this is why. The original file on your phone is fine. The version that arrives is not.
What Actually Happens to Your Photos in Messaging Apps
Every major messaging app applies compression to reduce file size and bandwidth. The specifics differ, but the outcome is the same: pixels are thrown away, sharp edges are softened, and fine detail — text in a photo, texture in a landscape, small elements in a screenshot — is permanently lost. This is a one-way operation. You cannot recover the original quality from a compressed version.
WhatsApp resizes images to a maximum of 1600 pixels on the longest side and applies aggressive JPEG compression. A 12-megapixel photo from a modern phone (typically 4000×3000 pixels) gets downscaled by roughly 60% and recompressed. The result is a file that is typically 80–90% smaller than the original — which is great for bandwidth, and terrible if you wanted the full detail.
Facebook Messenger
Messenger compresses images during upload and does not offer an option to send the original. The compression is slightly less aggressive than WhatsApp in some cases, but the image is still re-encoded, resized, and detail is lost. Sending a photo in a group chat adds another layer of compression.
iMessage (iPhone to iPhone)
iMessage is the least aggressive of the major apps — it sends photos at near-original quality when both devices are on iMessage. But the moment the recipient is on Android (forcing SMS/MMS fallback) or the photo is large, compression kicks in. And even the iMessage path is not truly lossless for every file type and size.
Telegram
Telegram offers a 'Send without compression' option if you explicitly choose it. But the default send button compresses, and most people never change the default. If you forget to long-press and select the uncompressed option, you have sent a degraded version.

Attaching a photo as a file in an email — not pasting it inline — typically sends the original without recompression. Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail all preserve the file as-is. The downside is the overhead: composing an email, addressing it, sending, switching devices, finding it in your inbox. For a single photo transfer between your own devices, this takes 30–60 seconds of busywork.
Cloud storage shared link
Google Drive, iCloud, and Dropbox all store the original file. Sharing a link preserves quality. But it requires an account on both ends, and for a quick one-off transfer it adds unnecessary steps — upload, generate link, send link, open link, download. You end up with a permanent shared link in your cloud storage for a file you only needed once.
Airdrop (Apple devices only)
AirDrop sends the original file with no compression — it is genuinely the best option if every device involved is made by Apple. The limitation is the ecosystem: it does not exist on Windows, Android, or ChromeOS. If your recipient is on anything other than an Apple device, AirDrop is not an option.
Browser-based file transfer
A tool that lets you upload a file and download it on another device via a short code sidesteps the messaging-app compression problem entirely. The file is stored as-is — images are re-encoded from raw pixels for security (stripping EXIF metadata and checking for embedded malware), but the visual quality is preserved.
